Isabel Allende: tales of passion

She begins with a Jewish saying, “What is truer than truth?

Answer: The story.

So Chilean novelist Isabel Allende tells the story of carrying the Olympic flag for the 2006 Olympic Games.

She shared the honor with Italian actress Sophia Loren, American actress Susan Sarandon, Nobel Peace-prize winner Wangari Maathai of Kenya, Nawal El Moutawakel of Morocco, Manuela Di Centa of Italy, Maria Mutola of Mozambique and Cambodian human rights activist Somaly Mam. It was the first time eight women carried the Olympic flag.

In this story, Sophia Loren ('the universal symbol of beauty and passion') is the star; Isabel Allende is her foil. It is a humorous, self effacing segue into Allende's passion for writing. Some quotes:

All stories interest me and some haunt me, until I end up writing them.

What matters most, more than training and luck, is the heart. Only the fearless and determined heart will get the gold medal. It is all about passion.

Heart is what drives us and determines our fate.

That is what I need for the characters in my books... I need mavericks, dissidents, adventurers, outsiders and rebels who ask questions, bend the rules and take risks... Nice people with common sense do not make interesting characters. They only make good former spouses.

And then, holding her audience to olympian standards, the writer tells the stories of less renowned flag bearers, like Wangari Maathai, who planted 30 million trees in Africa, and Somaly Mam, who fights passionately against child prostitution. And she tells tales of other passionate women who stand up for refugees in Congo and abused women in Bangladesh. Isabele Allende, an activist in her own right, minces no words:

I'm fed up with the power that a few exert over the many through gender, income, race and class... But for real change we need feminine energy in the management of the world.

The energy of creation and shared power, in contrast to the impulse to hoard wealth in any form, is the province of artists. 'Mavericks, dissidents, adventurers, outsiders and rebels who ask questions, bend the rules and take risks' - the characters Isabel Allende fills her stories with - abound in artist circles.

In this context, it's a tiny step to leave the 'long legs and legendary breasts' of movie stars far behind in our quest for the passionate heart. Our heart. Mine. Yours. Theirs. Passion shared by anyone who believes the storyteller's truth:
